Behind the brand: Blackhorse Lane Ateliers

Renowned sustainable denim brand Blackhorse Lane Ateliers will be bringing their carefully-crafted denim garments to Jacket Required Autumn/Winter 19 this January.

Ahead of the show, we visited their Walthamstow production unit to learn more about the brand’s slow-denim ethos.

The only jeans made in London for over 50 years, Blackhorse Lane Ateliers’ credentials align with Jacket Required’s aim to work towards a more sustainable future for fashion. Having opened its doors in April 2016, the brand produces ready-to-wear selvedge and organic raw denim with a focus on sustainability, community and unmatched quality.

Employing local machinists, the business also offers shared ownership to each employee, as well as minimising the environmental impact of making denim garments by using organic cotton, denim woven in Europe, and offering a lifetime repair policy that discourages fast fashion.

Founder Han Ates explains his journey started with reassessing his experience of working with fast fashion, “I realised the people who were producing denim about 150 years ago were producing smaller quantities and using lots of their own tailoring techniques. When the demand got bigger they introduced faster production methods. But the moment you do so, somehow the quality is lost.”

Going on to explain his approach to the brand’s workforce, Ates says, “Unfortunately, we don’t often appreciate the makers. It’s not always about money, it’s about how we as a society appreciate the profession. The makers have never been the popstars but here in this production unit we treat them like popstars. Without them we can’t produce anything. We want to share our experience and become an example to others, that’s our aim.”
