The Jacket Required SS20 Line Up: Teva

Adventurous, spirited and unafraid. These are just some of the adjectives outdoor footwear brand Teva use to describe themselves and their designs. Pioneered in 1984, Teva stands for freedom and their ethos is all about personal expression. Celebrating the independent and adventurous is what Teva do best – that’s why we sat down with Ellie Wardle, EMEA Marketing Manager, to learn more about this iconic American brand…

Tell us the story behind Teva– how did the brand start?

Teva’s original sport sandal emerged from the shores of the Colorado River, which flows through the Grand Canyon, back in 1984. Born out of necessity to prevent sandals from floating downstream, a resourceful river guide strapped two Velcro watchbands to a pair of old flip-flips. And just like that, Teva was born. Since then, we’ve retained the same pioneering spirit and continue to celebrate the freedom to explore.

How would you describe the Teva aesthetic?

As a pioneering brand in the modern outdoor space, Teva is famous for its versatility, functionality and sense of fun. Especially well known for vibrant and colourful webbing designs, each with a unique story to tell, we don’t take ourselves too seriously and infuse energy and life into our brand aesthetic.

What inspired the SS20 collection? Are there any themes we should be looking out for?

The SS20 collection is a celebration of the brand’s roots in the Grand Canyon. As 2019 coincides with the centenary of the foundation of the Grand Canyon as a national park, this season Teva is paying homage to its own origins in the Canyon with a $100k donation to the Grand Canyon Conservancy – a not-for-profit organisation that aims to preserve the park for future generations to enjoy.

Our GC100 collection features a brand-new webbing design that is inspired by the Canyon itself - the red to represent the rocks of the canyon walls, the yellow for the blazing sun and the deep blue for the rich shades of the Colorado river.

Tell us a little bit more about how sustainability comes into your collections.

At Teva, we take our responsibility for sustainability incredibly seriously. The brand has numerous initiatives driving towards greater circularity and transparency, and a key milestone in this journey will be SS20, when all our webbings will be made of 100% recycled PET.

What, to you, sums up the Teva wearer?

Teva is beloved by millions of people the world over, all united by their love of exploration and the outdoors, as well as comfort and style in footwear. The feeling of freedom associated with our brand is representative not only of the experience of comfort when our sandals are worn, but also an adventurous mindset that transcends any one type of wearer.
